The Highlander Center
MLK, Pete Seeger, Rosa Parks and Frank Abernathy (still trying to identify who the white woman is in the picture)
Highlander serves as a catalyst for grassroots organizing and movement building in Appalachia and the South. They work with people fighting for justice, equality and sustainability, supporting their efforts to take collective action to shape their own destiny. I’m in touch with them right now to get copies of parts of the 1981 Appalachian Land Study that we are working to update. Working with the Highlander Center is working for a progressive future for the rural south.
“An oppressed people collectively hold strategies for liberation that are lost to its individuals … The Highlander School had been a haven for the South’s handful of functional radicals during the thirties and the essential alma mater for the leaders of the CIO’s fledgling southern organizing drives.” - Diane McWhorter, Carry Me Home: Birmingham, Alabama, the Climactic Struggle of the Civil Rights Revolution.
